What Are Supertrees?
Unique to the landscape of Gardens by the Bay, Supertrees are true marvels of engineering and biology. They are an ensemble of 18 tree-like structures, varying in height from 25 metres (82 ft) to 50 metres (160 ft). These awe-inspiring Supertrees host enclaves of diverse plant species. An abundance of ferns, vines, orchids, and bromeliads, like Tillandsia, are found in these vertical structures.
What sets Supertrees apart is their innovative integration of environmental technologies mirroring the ecological functions of actual trees. They incorporate photovoltaic cells that soak up solar energy, akin to the process of photosynthesis, employing this energy source for various functions such as lighting up the trees. Similar to the way trees absorb rainwater and contribute to the water cycle, Supertrees also collect rainwater, which is then used for irrigation and for powering the fountain displays.
Furthermore, the Supertrees play an important role in the Gardens' ecosystem by facilitating air intake and exhaust, acting as integral components of the conservatory's natural cooling systems.
Fun Fact: In all, Supertrees are home to over 168,000 plants and 200 species!
